The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on October 6 and 7, 2004, granted orphan drug status to, respectively, Yondelis, a drug used to treat soft tissue sarcomas, and Aplidin, a drug for use in treating multiple myeloma. Both drugs were developed by Zeltia, the latter in partnership with Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research & Development. Aplidin had in June 2004 received FDA approval for use in treating acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Both drugs are currently in clinical trials. |
